The Nature of the Imagination:
A Growing Threat to Conservation
Lecture by Dr. Carl Strang

Aldo Leopold, born in the late 1800s, has become known for his “land ethics” and is credited with shaping our views about land today. Leopold, an avid outdoorsman, realized the importance of working with nature and sustaining the land for public use.

Dr. Strang has prepared this talk as though Dr. Leopold had traveled from the University of Wisconsin to visit Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, the first national tallgrass prairie and the largest piece of contiguous open space in northeastern Illinois. “Aldo Leopold” will center his talk on the dangers of “nature of the imagination,” as opposed to nature as experienced by careful observers and scientists in the field.

Though not a direct reading of an actual Leopold document, it is based on a careful study of Leopold themes.
