(June 14, 2006) – JUPITER presents the 2nd annual Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival (DBJF), Wednesday, August 23 through Sunday, August 27th, made possible by the Downtown Berkeley Association. The summer festival celebrates jazz and related styles of music from around the world, presenting over 45 events in 15 different Downtown Berkeley venues. Music, poetry, dance, film and cuisine are featured throughout the Downtown, promoting our city’s unique businesses and contributing to a more vibrant downtown community.

Expanding on the eclectic nature of Downtown Berkeley, this year’s Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival features a wide range of music. Confirmed artists include Mingus Amungus, Terry Riley, Ray Obiedo’s Mambo Caribe with Pete Escovedo, Kai Eckhardt’s Area 61, Zoe Ellis, John Santos and Machete Ensemble, Natasha Miller and Bobby Sharp, Jean Fineberg and Saxophunk, Laurie Antonioli and Zilberella, Myra Melford Group, Kenny Washington, Julian Pollack Trio, Taylor Eigsti Trio, AguaLibre, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Tera Johnson, Realistic Orchestra, John Stowell, John Schott’s Dream Kitchen, Ambrose Akinmusire, Wil Blades Duo, George Brooks Summit, Sarah Manning Trio, Poetry by California Poet Laureate Al Young, Richard Silberg, David Meltzer, Ivan Arguelles and many more.

Berkeley is fast becoming a destination to hear exciting, cutting-edge live jazz. On any given night during the DBJF, one can witness the sights and sounds of Berkeley by stepping into Jupiter, Jazzschool, downtown Restaurant, Anna’s Jazz Island, La Note, Venus Restaurant, Ristorante Raphael, Shattuck Down Low and others. Free outdoor performances featuring Festival headliners are held at BART Plaza and Jazzschool students groups perform at Berkeley Farmer’s Market. Poetry readings are scheduled at the Berkeley Public Library and Half Price Books and films are shown at GAIA Arts Center.
