Friday, August 22nd, party starter, cult hero, emcee and producer, DJ Quik hits the stage at DNA Lounge for a live band show, his first since a highly acclaimed tour at House of Blues venues in 2006. Since the Platinum selling Quik is the Name hit stores in 1991, DJ Quik has carved a well defined and respected niche in the rap game.

Seventeen years later with a platinum plaque and a pair of gold record to add to his collection, Quik’s hit making skills haven’t slowed, even though today, a majority of his acclaim is received from production credits on a who’s who of hip-hop and r&b. Quik has produced tracks for some of hip hop's greatest icons, from Tupac and Snoop Dogg to Talib Kweli and Jay-Z and has earned a slew of Billboard Music Awards in the process. He has also crafted hits for R&B acts, Janet Jackson, Debra Cox, Tony, Toni, Tone, Adina Howard and Truth Hurts.

In the early part of his career Quik scored big with singles, Tonight, Born and Raised in Compton, Way 2 Fonky and Let’s Get Down, collaborating with Bay Area R&B luminaries, Tony, Toni, Tone on the latter. Quik has been associated closely with contemporaries, Snoop Dogg, Dr.Dre, Xzibit and the Dogg Pound. He drew his inspiration heavily from Soul and Funk music, including Roger Troutman of Zapp and ultimate funkateer, George Clinton.

Quik has an unusual fanbase, considering his conspicuous beginnings as a gangster rapper who eventually transformed himself into a funk driven band leader and frontman. His lyrics are honest and straightforward and beats are dense and fonky. He often attracts die-hard devotees amongst the hardest gangstas and the most erudite backpackers. On Friday night, DJ Quik brings the funk to DNA Lounge, banging out classic hip-hop joints backed by a live band. Doors are at 10pm, show at 11:00. $25 advance / $30 DOS. Tickets available at http://www.dnalounge.com/calendar/2008/08.html#22.
