Diwali Celebration November 5, 2010

Throughout India and other countries, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists light thousands of small oil lamps called diyas (candles and electric lights are also used). To some, the light is meant to welcome Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth and prosperity, for the New Year. To all the light symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, justice over injustice, and knowledge over ignorance.

Our Diwali celebration, led by Rev. Kent Matthies, will begin with a traditional vegetarian Diwali feast at 6:00pm followed by the observance with Indian dance, music and community diya lighting and rangoli at 7:30pm. Sitar music will be performed by Thomas Flanagan & Friends and Indian dance performance by Usiloquy Dance Designs. No alcohol is permitted.
