I walked into the joint and Waits was playing on the Juke Box, something off the Rain Dogs album but I couldn't remember the name of the song. I figured this was the place--the right place at the right time--and that I'd be able to hang around without wanting to stick lit cigarettes in my eyes. Admiring the Van Gogh water stains on the ancient bar and avoiding conversation were my primary interests that night. The bartender seemed content to communicate mostly in nods and limited syllables, and thank god bourbon only has two. The balding mountain of man wore a perpetual frown but there was kindness in his eyes that made me feel bad about avoiding conversation.

We all wear masks.

He handed me the bourbon.

"What is the name of this song?" I whispered into amber liquid, bringing it to my lips.

"Gun Street Girl," said a female's voice and I looked up long enough to catch blood hair, pale eyes, and a wry grin that made me look back into my drink.

"I'm Kate," she said just as Waits faded into Mic Ronson's opening riff to Rebel, Rebel. "I love Bowie," she told me.

Who doesn't?

Distressed Flounder is a rockin' four-piece alternative and pop-punk band from Fairfax, VA. Influenced by a countless number of rock, pop, and punk bands, their sound refuses to solidify into too much more than music that will give people a dosage of energy and auditory pleasure.

Their first EP, Upstream, was released for free both physically and digitally in October 2010. With every aspect of it complimented in one way or another, they have been given plenty of motivation to continue forward with writing and performing songs for any audience willing to listen.
