Cultural organisation Dishari, known for its annual one-act play festival in Pune, has organised the First Dishari Sruti Natyotsav’ (also called a radio play) at the Nehru Memorial Hall on February 14 and 15. Seven plays five in Bengali, one in Marathi and one in Hindi will be performed at the festival.

“Sruti natak is something that is particularly dear to the Bengalis and used to be performed when television had not made its presence felt. The entire play hinges on the voice modulations of the actors since they act only through their voices,” says Surya Sengupta, director, writer and actor of one such play, Ekti Gharer Attokatha’ (Chronicle of an abode).

The plays include Samudra’ (Sea), Priyabandhu’ (Best Friend), Ek Abaastab Galpo’ (An Incredible Story), Gargi Eka’ (Gargi Alone) in Bengali, Rabindranath Tagore’s Achalayatan’ (The Unbending) in Marathi and the Hindi play Harjit’ (Trounce and Triumph).
