Because the most memorable photos of New York City capture its stunning skyline, it is easy to forget that acres of nature actually make up the heart of Manhattan.

Wide-open space and tranquility aren’t two qualities normally associated with Manhattan, but you’ll enjoy both during a two-hour walking tour of the wildlife at Central Park with your guides Thom Schuchaskie, a former wilderness instructor at the NYC Outward Bound Center and Leslie Baglio, a horticulturalist who previously worked at the New York Botanical Gardens. Together you’ll explore the North Woods, located near Harlem in the northwest quadrant of Central Park, where Thom and Leslie will point out notable flora and fauna.

Thanks to the “Forever Wild” program led by the New York City’s Parks and Recreation Department, the North Woods is home to some of the best-preserved ecological land you’ll see within city limits.
