Embarcadero at Bay
San Francisco, California 94133

The premiere of a documentary film about Bay Area high school students is one highlight of an event sponsored by Oracle and focusing on how young people can get involved in ocean conservation efforts. The event, “DigitalOcean: Connecting for Ocean Sustainability” is designed to bring attention to UC Santa Barbara's DigitalOcean, a virtual commons being developed to create global communities using new media to advance ocean sustainability. The film, "Students Saving the Ocean," interviews students and environmental leaders on ways to reduce humans' harmful effects on the ocean, building on ideas from David Helvarg's book "50 Ways to Save the Ocean." In addition to Helvarg, the program includes cartoonist Jim Toomey of "Sherman's Lagoon," filmmaker Ron Blatman of "Saving the Bay," and Director of UC Santa Barbara's Marine Science Institute Dr. Steven Gaines. Sponsors include Oracle, UC Santa Barbara's Environmental Media Initiative, Outhink Media, Aquarium of the Bay, The Bay Institute, and the New Media Research Institute.
