This 5-week course is a concise introduction to the technical basics and creative possibilities of digital photography. Students are encouraged to use their cameras as an expressive tool and incorporate visual language into their imagery. Students learn to use their Digital SLR cameras, process images in Adobe Photoshop CS5, and create fine inkjet prints.

Topics covered include techniques of proper exposure, principles of composition, and understanding the use of lighting. Because image processing and printing will be done with the use of the computer and printer, students should have a basic understanding of how to use the computer (i.e. how to open up files, create folders, et cetera). Students will walk away from the class with an understanding of the technical and visual aspects related to digital photography and a small portfolio of black and white images.

There will be optional museum and gallery visits on some weekends. Although these are not mandatory, students are highly encouraged to attend these short trips.
