The Kanbar Center for the Performing Arts presents an evening of the dance made popular through the colorful Bollywood movies of India, and the joyful closing dance scene in Slumdog Millionaire, Dholrythms of Non-Stop Bhangra, Sat, Jan. 23, 8pm. This event is a dance presentation marking the second event within the Kanbar Center's Music of the World Series.

Dholrhythms is an organization dedicated to raising awareness and educating people about the artistic and cultural heritage of India and is dedicated to promoting and sharing the beautiful folk dance from Punjab, India known as Bhangra and Giddha. The evening will include a performance by instructors as well as students and demonstration of movements for the audience.

Led by Vicki Virk and Suman Raj, Dholrhythms Dance Troupe concentrates on highlighting the ancestral and ethnic roots while pushing boundaries with a contemporary style. The result is a fresh and unique dance full of fun, energy and passion. The eclectic group of women who make up the Dholrhythms Dance Troupe have become one of the most talked about dance troupes and have been featured on some of the largest stages in the San Francisco Bay Area including Stern Grove Festival, Michael Franti's Power to the Peaceful in Golden Gate Park, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Harmony Festival, and more.

WHAT IS BHANGRA? Bhangra is a beautiful form of expression that will engulf you in its spirit as soon as you experience it. It's a celebration of life and is done with zest, enthusiasm, energy. It is perhaps the most vigorous form of South Asian Dances. Bhangra originated in the fertile land of Punjab, India. Punjab means land of five waters (rivers); it is a Northwest region of the Indian Subcontinent, currently spread amongst Indian states of Punjab, Jummau & Kashmir, and part of Himachal, Hariyana and Pakistani Punjab. Though bhangra may have existed longer, its history can be traced as far back as 500 years.
