This month’s Desert Treks program is a Geology field trip to Aden Crater. The trip leaves the Museum at 8 a.m., will caravan to the site, and return by 4 p.m. Aden Crater, a shield volcano, lies within Aden Lava Flow and is part of the Greater Potrillo Mountains Complex. The Complex is located approximately 30 miles southwest of Las Cruces and features the West Potrillo Mountains, Mount Riley, Eagle Nest, Cox Peak, Indian Basin, East Potrillo Mountains, and Aden Lava Flow; which includes Aden Crater. The Greater Potrillo Mountains Complex contains three Wilderness Study Areas (WSA); the West Potrillo Mountains, Mount Riley, and Aden Lava Flow, which are all managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
