Although beginning somewhat later and with less intensity, Danish emigration followed the same basic pattern as that of the other Scandinavian groups. Mass emigration got under way in the 1870s, and one out of every ten Danes emigrated, as compared with one out of every six Norwegians. Danish immigrants first established communities in the Midwest, many of them later moving further west. The early settlers homesteaded or worked as farmhands, later immigrants tended to settle in cities. As a whole, however, the Danes seemed to assimilate faster than any other nationality.
