Dengue Fever’s psychedelic take on the Cambodian pop sounds of the 60s makes them one of rock'n'roll's most unique success stories. Their Nuggets-style garage rock and psychedelia, heavy on the organ and fuzztone guitar make for a driving Cambodian/American sound. Dengue Fever is fronted by Cambodian songstress, Chhom Nimol, who performed regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia before joining the band. Her powerful singing is marked by a luminous vibrato that adds exotic ornamentations to her vocal lines and her hypnotic stage moves are based on traditional dances. In 2005, the band toured Cambodia. It was the first time any band, much less an American one, had performed this style of music in Cambodia since Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge took over the country in 1975. A documentary feature film of this trip, “Sleepwalking Through the Mekong”, was enthusiastically received at international film festivals. www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic
