In the past the mask was used to reveal the gods behind the physical world and the truths that they impart. Now, however, to be masked can mean to be hidden, to be inauthentic. Exploring the use of mask through history is a way of exploring how we have reached this point, from ritual to celebration and drama to satyrs to a point where the mask may be removed to reveal the emancipated human being capable of the best and the worst. Deborah Ravetz will speak accompanied by the actor and mask-maker Mike Chase. They will use masks and words to explore this theme and its implications.
