Dear Gustibus: Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Stanford White, and Charles Follen McKim
Samuel G. White, architect, author, and great-grandson of Stanford White

The thirty-year friendship between sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and architects Stanford White and Charles McKim was paralleled by their collaborations on major works such as Boston’s Shaw Memorial, Chicago’s Standing Lincoln, New York’s Sherman Monument, and the figure of Diana that surmounted White’s tower for Madison Square Garden. While much of the sculptor’s work with McKim was on highly public civic commissions, his projects with White included more private designs such as the Adams Memorial in Washington’s Rock Creek Cemetery, the Zodiac Clock for Henry Villard, and dozens of individual frames for Saint-Gaudens’s portrait reliefs.

This lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Augustus Saint-Gaudens in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,” June 30–November 15, 2009.

The Eugénie Prendergast Exhibitions of American Art are made possible by a grant from Jan and Warren Adelson.
