Deadheaders' Garden Gala & Sneak Preview to SF Flower & Garden Show March 19, 2013

From Woodstock to Rootstock, Tie Dye to Black Tie, Opera to Rock, this promises to be the event of the season. The Deadheaders' Garden Gala, a benefit for the Morcom Rose Garden in Oakland, is also the opening night of the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show.

Mix it up and dress in your finest tie dye, tuxedos and sequins. Be enchanted by opera singers Lauren Woody and David Gustafson. Dance to our Grateful Dead-style Sycamore Slough String Band with David Thom and David Gans; video projections by VJ Rainbow Puddle; hors d'oeuvres by Ovations Catering. Take home your own personal rose plant.

The Morcom Rose Garden, one of the jewels of Oakland, is a rare 7+ acre green oasis located at 700 Jean Street, one block off Grand Avenue in Oakland, CA. This public garden jewel is a 30s era formal rose garden surrounded by winding paths, graceful stairways, dramatic water features and enough natural habitat for a variety of birds and was recently accredited by the American Rose Society.

The garden is cared for by a group of 20-30 volunteers called The Dedicated Deadheaders who can be found pruning, weeding, and clipping the dead heads off of the rose bushes on weekends in their tie dyed vests. Proceeds from the evening will replace dead rose bushes, purchase fertilizer and mulch (no insecticides are used in the garden), hand tools, work gloves, and additional vests that the volunteers tie dye themselves.

Many organizations were considered, but the Morcom Rose Garden was chosen as the beneficiary of this prestigious opening night of the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show. Attendees will be able to get a sneak preview, without the crowds, of 18 unique display gardens created by top West Coast garden designers. Awards will be presented to the designers that evening. Toast to the winners of the prestigious contest with free sparkling wine. A silent auction includes items from garden companies, landscapers, and artists. Free parking on the evening of the gala.
