The San Diego Museum of Man will host its second annual Day of the Dead celebration on Sunday, Oct. 28. Day of the Dead is a celebration of ancestors, a time to remember loved ones and to honor them. The origin of the celebration in Mexico can be traced back to indigenous populations such as the Aztec and Maya. Families and communities pay homage by erecting altars for their deceased family members. Altars are traditionally decorated with sugar skulls, photographs, fruit, flowers, bread, candles, religious figures, and cut paper (papel picado).

The Day of the Dead event at the Museum begins with the construction of altars at 8 a.m. Altars will be available for viewing in the Museums outdoor central plaza throughout the day. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., event festivities will include food, performances, and a special slide presentation, Dias de los Muertos, by Grace Johnson, emeritus curator of Latin American Collections, San Diego Museum of Man. Take-home art activities will be available for children and their families. Visitors will also be able to participate in an art auction. Hundreds of people are expected to attend this event. It is free to Museum of Man members; $5 per person for visitors with membership cards from other Balboa Park institutions; and $10 for the general public.

The San Diego Museum of Man is an educational, non-profit corporation founded in 1915 with a commitment to educating people about people. Located beneath the landmark California Tower in Balboa Park, the Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For further information, please call (619) 239-2001 or visit the Museum of Mans web site at www.museumofman.org.
