Marking the third annual celebration of Shavuot, The Festival of Weeks, The Swedish American Music Hall will be hosting an all-night culmination of Music, Film, and Discussion on May 22nd from 8pm to Sunrise. Built in 1907, the Swedish American Hall is one of the hippest and hottest spots in San Francisco—blending Old World charm with New World style.
Highlighting the nightlong event will be Wil-Dog Abers, sometimes bassist for Los Super Seven, taking the stage with an array of musicians for a unique klezmer ’n’ beats jam session featuring beatboxer Tommy Shepherd. Adding to the list of performances are Bay Area native and “Dub Mission” founder DJ Sep along with “Beatsauce” DJ Raw B.
Ironweed Films, a socially conscious independent film company, will be joining the night’s events by providing several of their renowned films for viewing. Included in the scheduled film viewings will be the most recent work from filmmakers Tiffany Shlain and Ken Goldberg of the Moxie Institute, who help create, distribute, and develop films pertaining to the enhancement of positive social change. In addition John Schott’s all-night 7-hour interactive Shavuot piece will be screened and there will be a multimedia installation by Jonathan Zallben.
Discussions for the night will feature Dan Wolf and Tommy Shepherd of SF hip hop band Felonious; David Biale, professor and author of Biblical Blood: Why Moses threw blood on the people at Mt. Sinai; Amichai Lau-Lavie, Executive and Artistic Director of Storahtelling; David Katznelson, record man; Rachel Biale, Bay Area Regional Director of the Progressive Jewish Alliance; and Sarah Church, Program Director of the Progressive Jewish Alliance.
With the unique schedule of music, dancing, film, discussion groups, food and drinks, this is set to be the biggest DAWN bash yet. Once again, helping to raise the underdog status of Shavuot for yet one more year.
