Join the Riverside Theatres for one of the finest solo musical comedy performers in the world, David Scheel on Sunday 13 June at 7.30pm for the next instalment of Riverside’s Music Series.

David Scheel, known for turning classical musical on its head, mixes superb piano playing with pure fun and is known for turning classical music on its head. His raconteur-style sends up the ridiculous things in everyday life and is delivered in a huge range of voices and accents. In this hilarious new show, Scheel charts the rise and fall of the composer and pianist, from Bach and Mozart through to the great romantic virtuosos such as Liszt and Chopin to the present. The show includes hilarious parodies of both opera and pop and a tribute to Brecht and Weill, aptly entitled Brecht is Vile.

South Australian, David Scheel gained an Honours degree in languages from the University of Adelaide and a concert diploma on the piano. However, coming from a theatrical family, theatre was Scheel’s first love. At an early age, he moved to England, where he worked for eighteen years. In the UK, Scheel’s work ranged across a broad spectrum including pantomimes, work with the National Theatre, TV series such as Bergerac, and regular appearances on BBC’s Stop the Week and The Garden Party. His best-known show, Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player sold out in London’s West End at three consecutive Edinburgh Festivals, picking up a Variety Club of Great Britain award along the way.

Since returning to Australia in 1994, Scheel has expanded his international touring schedule into the USA and Canada and in October 2002 he undertook his first tour of South East Asia, breaking box office records throughout the region. He has also devised two new programs, Maestro, A Celebration of Musical Eccentrics, and his latest offering, A Shorte Hysterical Historie of Musicke, which was also filmed and broadcast on US television in August 2002. Away from mixing classical music and comedy, Scheel is also an award-winning serious composer, and a highly respected writer on conservation issues.
