“Metamorphosis,” the artist’s second solo show, features a recent series of oil and pastel paintings inspired by classical allegorical portrait painting and superhero comic books. Additionally, it will be the first showing of “Metamorphosis,” a graphic novel 45 feet wide by 11 inches tall, done in acrylic on plexiglass, and inspired by Houdini, Superheroes, Mexican Lucha Libre, and Ovid.

Gremard Romero’s work is unified by an engagement with the practice and methods of the old masters, particularly those of the Baroque and Rococo periods. Their perfection of craft, their exploration of narrative modes, and their explicit connection to history and politics are a source of continuing fascination and inspiration to him. Embedding contemporary iconography and themes in a classical figurative craft, he seeks to reveal the hidden relationships and continuities between classical art and contemporary culture.
