Schubert (1797–1828) endured a short and tragic life that was frequently hindered by poverty and neglect. But he managed to awaken romanticism in music and complete the journey begun by Haydn in the formation of the classical style. These programs highlight Schubert’s daily life in Vienna—his letters, his friendships, and his struggles with his health. The composer Benjamin Britten called the eighteen months that separated the death of Beethoven from Schubert’s as the greatest year and a half in music. Each program presents young musicians from The Juilliard School of Music.
