Dastangoi - Play : Tales from the Hamza-Nama. Directed by Mahmood Farooqui. Cast: Mahmood Farooqui, Danish Husain and Naseeruddin Shah. The series opens with Dastangoi. Originating in Iran centuries ago, the art of Dastan (legend) goi (telling) spread almost all over the globe, with each country tapping its own history and myths to create its own distinctive tradition of allegorical storytelling. India itself has several avatars. Dastangoi in Hindustani flourished until the early 20th century when it was consumed by the talkie cinema, the last few dastangos (storytellers) dying in penury. Mahmood Farooqui, a Delhi-based historian and theatre worker, and his troupe, Dastak, have been trying to revive this forgotten art for the last few years. Motley presents this Dastak production.
