- MOZART Symphony No.41, 'Jupiter'
- BEETHOVEN Symphony No.9, 'Choral'

The Orchestra returns to the theme of final symphonies with two of the world's most popular symphonic works. Judging from the available evidence, Mozart's last three symphonies were completed within a six week period in the summer of 1788. This is a staggering achievement, given not only the undisputed mastery of each work but also the fact that each is a unique statement with its own distinct sound-world and expressive mood. The C major symphony is the grandest of the trilogy, its Olympian power and great fugal finale earning it the nickname 'Jupiter'.

Beethoven's last completed symphony is in every sense a revolutionary work, characterised by an intensity of emotional expression and overpowering energy. The unfolding drama of the first three movements culminates in the celebrated finale - the Ode to Joy - in which vocal soloists and choir intone Beethoven's heartfelt and unforgettable plea for universal love.
