Amongst various bobble-head devil dolls, plastic Madonna statues and tikis, Damian Mulinix played his first

show in Astoria Tuesday night April 18 at the venerable night spot, the Voodoo Room. Mulinix was opening for rising Omaha,

Neb. singer Justin Lemoreaux, who performs under the nom de plume of Midwest Dilemma, who is currently on a multi-state

three month tour of the western United States. Omaha has become a hotbed of sorts for musical talent in recent years,

most notably through the independent record label Saddle Creek. Mulinixs own indie label, Penny Collection Recordings,

which he started in his Long Beach attic, just put out his first real album, a five song EP called Sketches, which is

an advance release and features songs from the two upcoming full-length records he is currently working on. Mulinix played

these and six other songs in his half-hour set that night. Mulinix said his sound harkens more to mid-career Beatles

albums like Rubber Soul, Revolver and the White Album. It can be kind of weird, but also very tuneful and

pop-sounding, he said. Im not saying I sound like them or Im doing songs like that, but more the mental approach to

shaping different sounds like that is what Im shooting for. On his current recordings, which he is doing solo, he is

using a wide variety of instruments to help find this sound, including an original Rhodes electric piano, chord organ,

skipping records, banjo, synthesizer, kazoo, toy accordion, as well as more traditional things like guitar, bass, piano

and drums. Mulinix said he hopes to have at least one of the records is finished and ready by the time he goes on a

mini-tour in June that takes him to dates around northern California.
