About Life and Debt...

"Whose interests do the IMF, World Bank and globalization really serve?" Questions like this come to life in this powerful documentary, which exposes the reality of globalization's impacts on Jamaica in recent years. From workers, farmers and government officials, we learn about the stark differences between what most tourists see and what Jamaicans experience every day.

Victims of the "economic Darwinism" that today's brand of globalization tends to espouse, developing countries like Jamaica are deliberately being turned into captive markets, trapped in an endless and escalating cycle of debt repayment under policies determined by and for the benefit of richer nations like the US, Canada, the EU and Japan. Inhabitants once self-sufficient become cheap labor, local competition is penalized, and local agriculture & industry become further eroded.

With narration by author Jamaica Kincaid and a lively reggae soundtrack, Life and Debt puts a human face on the impacts of globalization, and engages us all to find fairer alternatives to the dog-eat-dog world of today's global economy... where a few have most of the advantages and many are still left struggling to survive.
