The New Songs Project is sponsored by Target.
Composition students at Rice University and the University of Houston have created new musical works using poems written by students from Grady Middle School. Music performance students from Rice and UH perform the new works, composed for soprano and string quartet, alongside recitations of other poems written during creative writing workshops.
The New Songs Project aims to invigorate creativity, forge multigenerational collaborations and expose under-served audiences to great music. Grady Middle School students have participated in a series of workshops, focusing on art-song and creative writing. Texts created in these workshops have been incorporated into new music composed by students from the Rice’s Shepherd School of Music and UH’s Moores School of Music. This project builds on a Writers in the Schools program at Grady Middle School.
