SustainLane, an independent non-partisan media and research organization based in San Francisco, has released its 2006 Sustainable Cities Rankings, choosing Portland, Oregon as America’s No. 1 Sustainable City. Ranking criteria include environmental and human health, commute to work, civic participation, housing affordability, green building and green economy innovation as well as other measures. Warren Karlenzig, SustainLane’s director of research and chief strategy officer, will join us on June 16th to present the Sustainable City 2006 findings, and will discuss the methodology used to rank cities--and tell us how the Washington, D.C. region fared. This presentation provides a unique opportunity to consider green building in the context of overall regional sustainability, and to measure Washington’s progress in the context of national activity in major cities. Warren is well-versed in the green building programs of cities that have been ranked.

IGG participants and their invited guests are welcome. We will have room for 25 to 30 people in the DC Office of Planning’s conference room.

Please RSVP Stella Tarnay at [email protected] by June 14th so that we can order enough food. The presentation and discussion will be followed by a regular IGG meeting from 1:00 to 2:00 pm.
