Andrew Stephen, Director

Andrew has almost two decades experience in the information systems industry, specialising in security for the past decade. In this time he has worked with many government and private sector organisations to help them align their security needs with their business drivers. Clients have included some of New Zealand’s largest organisations, including New Zealand Post, Telecom New Zealand, New Zealand Customs Service, Department of Labour and Bank of New Zealand.
As a consultant working with a wide range of New Zealand organisations Andrew looked to understand the challenges faced by businesses relating information security to business goals. Drawing from many of today’s leading frameworks including The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), Control Objective (CoBIT), Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL), International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 27000 and Sherwood Applied Business Security Architecture (SABSA), Andrew has found some techniques which help to establish common understanding and bridge the divide between business and security.
Andrew’s business focussed approach is balanced with a technical background ranging from programming, operational management to security solution architecture and design. This gives him a clear insight into issues from multiple perspectives.
Andrew holds professional certifications from ISACA, (ISC)2 and SABSA, serves on the board of the ISACAWellington Chapter, and is a member of the Information Security Forum (ISF).

Seminar Background
Security professionals fight a never-ending war against Cyber Security hackers and criminals.
Many organisations already utilise Cloud Computing services or are (at least) investigating costs and benefits. From a management perspective it must be understood that cloud computing is a new ICTsourcing and delivery model NOTa new technology. As such Cloud Computing agencies may have limited ability to prescribe the protective security of the cloud environment. Yet agencies will remain ultimately responsible for information that is stored and / or processed in the cloud. Organisation management must maintain assurance that security of cloud service provider meets requirements.
In the light of new and emerging technologies that slowly but effectively blend organisational borders, the need for identification of new threats and being ready to address and mitigate is paramount.
Getting the Cyber Security business impact message across remains a big issue for Information Security Management. New threats are growing especially from social engineering, currently taken to the whole new level by social media platforms and importance of identifying the human factors as vulnerabilities.
