Current Events: A Closer Look
Become an informed citizen! By delving into issues affecting our country in this lively current events discussion group, participants will have a better understanding of the important matters facing the American people today. In this course, current events are discussed with the assistance of an experienced moderator who presents diverse points of view. During each session, a specific topic is explored through assigned readings, class discussion, and guest speakers. Come to class with an open mind and ready to share opinions regarding today’s most critical issues. Topics covered include:
• Who should provide health coverage to Americans, employers or the government?
• As a nation of immigrants, how do we decide who is welcome and who is not?
• Can business and government work together to solve environmental problems?
• Do we need a national education policy?
• How does free trade help or hurt the U.S. economy?
• Election 2008: California’s role in choosing the next president.

Moderator: Adele Lander Burke is Vice President, Learning for Life, at the Skirball Cultural Center. She has a BA in political science from Washington University, St. Louis, and an MA in education from Hebrew Union College, Los Angeles. Burke has been developing and facilitating current events discussion groups for several years.
