Cuban Professor to Lecture October 20, 2010

Julia Portela Ponce de Leon, an award-winning artist and art history professor from Cuba, will lecture at the Las Cruces Museum of Art on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 6:30pm.

Professor Portela will discuss how artists from different generations challenge the traditional boundaries faced by women and men in Cuban society. The lecture will be in Spanish with simultaneous English translation.

Portela Ponce de Leon teaches Colonial and Post-Colonial Latin American art, as well as Cuban and Western art at Havana’s Instituto Superior de Arte and is currently the head of the Department of Art Theory. She lectures extensively in Spain, Mexico, and Colombia. She was awarded the Orden Nacional por la Educacion Cubana in 2001, and the Distincion por la Cultura Nacional in 2005.
