Description:
In the 'new frontier' landscape that is Web 2.0, one of the primary
components in the web designer's arsenal is CSS. Cascading Style
Sheets (CSS) is a W3C standard recommended to separate Web content
from presentation in HTML/XHTML. CSS provides web site designers and
developers greater flexibility and control in page layout and design,
as well as methods to streamline prototyping and improve usability.
The objective of this course is to quickly familiarize students with
the intuitive use of most features in the latest CSS specification
(CSS2.1).

We will begin with an overview of the W3C CSS specification, its
various elements and their usage, and continue through with review and
discussion of the following:
- external style sheets vs. internal style sheets vs. inline styles
- rule definitions
- inheritance and selector specificity
- elements and positioning
- text properties
- margins and borders
- working with images
- browser compatibility and compliance

While taking a comparative look at the differences between table-based
layouts (old school) and CSS design (new school), we will decontruct
and restructure the markup of a sample page, and then rebuild the page
using CSS, while illustrating the advantages and disadvantages of the
opposing layout methods.

Upon completion of this course, students will have a clear
understanding of CSS, its rules and its usage to build Web pages to
current standards. Students will be able to customize styles, control
visual appearance and detail, and handle variations in page rendering
across browsers and platforms.

Handouts, including resource links, will be provided.

Prerequisites:
Participants should have a working knowledge of HTML with some web
development experience. This course is primarily aimed at web
developers who are looking to transition from table-based layouts to

Instructor: Ray Hunter
Ray Hunter, professional web designer and internet application
developer, has practiced the art of new media elite judo for over ten
years. Formerly a "rock star", he obtained his Internet-related skills
on the information highways and Silicon Alley by-ways of various
start-ups, commercial agencies and technology corporations. His
passions include maintaining functional knowledge of the latest
technologies and common practices for creative presentation of content
on the Web. Although he predicted the popularity of blogs some five
years ago, he does not have one. With a sincere love of sharing and
teaching, his relocation from the SF Bay Area to Boulder is to the
advantage of BDA and its members. And it should be noted, he really
enjoys answering questions.
