Spurred from the book Crowns by photographer Michael Cunningham and journalist Craig Marberry, this exhibit examines the African–American custom of church hats.

In 1941, while living in New Orleans, Jacob Lawrence began a series of gouache paintings focused on the life of the Abolitionist John Brown. More than 35 years later, the artist revisited the series to produce a limited edition portfolio of 22 hand–printed screenprints. This historic set of prints is on loan to Piedmont Arts through the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by Richmond, Virginia collector, Derrick Johnson. Its travel is supported by the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.
