Tucked into a row of warehouses in Little Haiti CrossFit 305 is rethinking fitness in an image obsessed Miami. On Saturday May 23 it will host a fitness competition with the winner garnering bragging rights and a month of free training. Competitors will compete for points through a series of exercises including running, calisthenics and weight lifting.

“We are training people to live longer, healthier, and better lives,” said CrossFit305 co-owner Pete Kazanas.

No cable machines or ellipticals are in this bare bones warehouse gym. The walls are lined with dumbbells, rubber lifting plates, kettle bells, medicine balls, climbing ropes, gymnastics rings and other accoutrements of traditional, effective fitness programs.

During a typical Workout of the Day (WOD) the gym is filled with sweaty men and women doing constantly varied functional movements. The workouts are “for time,” and the competition pushes trainees to their limits and beyond.

“No one here works out alone. We train together. The group is very supportive and encouraging, which is what you need to get you through,” said CrossFit 305 co-owner Dan Martin.

If you feel like your same old gym routine isn’t cutting it or you just want to see how the top athletes, police officers, special operations units and fitness buffs actually get fit, come through on Saturday May 23, 2009 and see how fitness can be different. Workouts are scaleable to all fitness levels.
