In Mexico, the creation of paper-mâché sculptures is a respected and venerable art form known as Cartonería. This art form combines Aztec styles with Spanish techniques and is deeply rooted in ancient Mexican legends, traditions, and craftsmanship. In a hands-on evening class at The Crucible in Oakland, you can learn the art and tradition of Cartonería from Ruben Guzman, an artisan who has been making and teaching beautiful sculptures in paper mâché for the past ten years. Over the course of five weeks and fifteen hours of instruction, you will create fantastic and colorful sculptures from paper and recycled materials, using mythological beasts and characters as a starting point. Any student over the age of 12 is welcome in this class.
