Courses - Metaphysics and its Critics September 21, 2012

Metaphysics is one of the oldest branches of western philosophy and one of the most enduring, notwithstanding a number of significant attacks on its nature, structure and content, particularly in the mid- to late-twentieth century. In this fully illustrated day, we look closely and rigorously at arguments put forward by a number of its critics (including sceptics, Hume, Kant, Russell, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Habermas, poststructuralist and 'post-metaphysical' thinkers) in order to see if their criticisms can be sustained or overcome. Is it possible to 'overcome' metaphysics, as some have argued? Is it possible for us to think today in ways that suggest that the vast trajectories of the western metaphysical tradition are anachronistic, moribund or exhausted?
