10305 – 97 STREET
Edmonton, Alberta

Opening Reception: Wednesday April 19, 2006

The works in Corpus Spiritus Anima are, for the most part, mixed media collages or constructions, incorporating found objects, natural materials such as bark, bone, and beeswax, as well as more conventional materials including plaster, ink, oil paint, acrylics, and inkjet prints. There will also be a selection of digital collages and small mixed media sculpture on display as well.

The title for the show comes from the alchemical theory of the tria prima (three first principles): In the same way that body, soul, and spirit were said to compose the nature of man, the alchemical medicine that would transform metals was said to be composed of corpus, spiritus, and anima.

Lancaster says, ?I wish to explore the peculiar human impulse to define and atomize things of great complexity. This impulse comes, I feel, partially from an effort to understand things much larger than oneself, but also from the desire to harness those forces of energy and change so evident in the natural world, and make them subject to human whims.?
