John Jewczyn, award-winning video journalist and a 1969 Carleton College graduate, will present a convocation titled ?Beyond the Ivory Tower: Adventures in the Real World with a Carleton Education? at 10:50 a.m. on Friday, April 29 at Carleton?s Skinner Memorial Chapel. His presentation will reflect on his 34 year career in video journalism and the benefits of a liberal arts education. The event is free and open to the public.

For the majority of his career in video journalism, Jewczyn worked as a videographer for the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in New York City on the NBC Nightly News, Dateline, Today and other magazine news shows and documentaries. His work has been recognized with the Alfred I. duPont Award from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and the Peabody Award from the University of Georgia. In 1975, Jewczyn?s five-part series on iron workers was awarded an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Since retiring from NBC last year, Jewczyn has spent his time working on more personal projects and passing on his knowledge of video journalism to the next generation.

As a Carleton student, Jewczyn drew together his diverse interests in art, psychology and photography to help form Carleton?s first film studies program. Though he majored in psychology, Jewczyn graduated from Carleton with honors for his independent work in film and other cinematography. After Carleton, Jewczyn pursued a Ph.D. in child psychology but a summer job at KSTP-TV in Minneapolis ultimately lead him to a career in television production.
