Nicola Lopez: Constriction Zone
November 17, 2007 - January 12, 2008
Opening Reception Saturday November 17, from 6 to 8pm. (admission free)

The New York-based artist Nicola Lopez will premiere a site-specific installation and monumental drawing that continue her fascination with how technological growth and sprawl are shaping our contemporary landscape.

Lopez is known for her print-based installations, composed of silkscreen and woodblock prints on mylar, that the artist composes into billowing accretions that take advantage of each gallery's architecture by traversing walls, ceilings and floors. In contrast to her subject matter, her works remain distinctly handmade - so much so that her tires, cell phone towers and highway systems incongruously display a certain delicacy and vulnerability.

Nicola Lopez received her MFA from Columbia University in 2004. She has exhibited extensively in the US and abroad, at venues including the Center for Contemporary Art (Santa Fe), The Museum of Modern Art, Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (San Juan), El Museo del Barrio, and Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (Cusco, Peru) and she has completed recent artist residencies at the Headland Center for the Arts (Sausalito, CA) and La Curtidur’a (Oaxaca, Mexico). This is Lo—pez's first exhibition in Minnesota.
