Every year in America, 2,261 high school students drop out, 192 youth are arrested for violent crimes. These issues also affect the youth and adults in the South Asian community on a regular basis.

Daya Houston understands the need of the South Asian community to address issues dealing with relationships among the teens, young adults and parents, empowerment, effective communication and making healthy choices.

On August 29th 2009 Daya proudly present a must-attend seminar on money management for women titled Connect and Communicate: A seminar for teens, young adults and parents on forming healthy relationships.

It will be an experience for parents to take control of their communication with their teens, whereas the teens will learn to fall in love with themselves, communicate more effectively and make integrity based decisions, under the influence of the culture.

The all day seminar will be held at the University Center, University of Houston Main Campus, and is free for all. The highlight of the seminar will be an interactive theatre performance by Geeta Cowlagi and her group from Voices Against Violence at UT Austin. Through scripted and improvised dialogue and audience participation, the group will demonstrate the day’s themes such as communication techniques, overt and covert messages, power and control issues affecting relationships, cultural conflicts and stereotypes and biases
Raj Bhavsar, Bronze Medallist at Olympics 2008 and Sonia Azad, ABC 13 reporter will be sharing their experiences with other youth leaders.

Presenters include professionals from Child Builders, a Houston organization promoting positive social and emotional development in children, Montgomery County Women’s Center and Saheli, Austin.

This is a free event and registration is required.
