A Meet the Author Event

Who: Lieve Joris, award-winning reporter and author

Event: In her new book, The Rebels’ Hour, Lieve Joris crafts a brilliant and horrifying portrait of Assani, a rebel leader who eventually becomes a high ranking general in the Congolese army. Assani leaves his remote eastern village to pursue his studies in the city to learn for the first time that he is ethnically Tutsi and, from that moment on, the fight for his identity dominates his existence. Although uninterested in politics or a military life, Assani is forced to take sides in the conflict rocking the Congo in the wake of the genocide in Rwanda. The Rebels’ Hour thrusts us into the chaos of a lawless country through the eyes of a rebel leader. Joris visits the Council with this timely piece as the Congo plunges back into conflict. Lieve Joris is widely considered to be one of the world’s leading journalists, with award-winning reporting spanning the globe from Hungary to the Middle East to Africa.
