The stories of Asia’s ancient crossroads of trade and cultural exchange lie at the heart of its underwater cultural heritage. Yet these remain largely undiscovered due to serious challenges to maritime archaeology. The destruction and looting of sites, and limited funding and resources for excavation and preservation, hamper research and recovery. Recent debates over shipwrecks salvaged in Southeast Asian waters are divided on how best to manage archaeology in this region.
This timely conference seeks to find a way forward for maritime archaeology in Southeast Asia and beyond. Speakers will assess a range of strategies including legal mechanisms, funding methods, capacity-building, scholarship, and preservation.
Tickets are available from all authorised SISTIC outlets, from the SISTIC website, or call the SISTIC hotline at +65 6348 5555 from till 17 June 2011.
Registration on Conference Day itself will also be available between 8am – 12pm at the Asian Civilisations Museum front desk.
