Concert: Guarneri String Quartet February 9, 2006

The renowned Guarneri String Quartet will present a concert, convocation and master class at Carleton College for the annual Ward Lucas Lecture Series in the Arts. The concert will be on Thursday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m., the convocation and master class on Friday, Feb. 10, at 10:50 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively. All events will take place in the Carleton College Concert Hall and are free and open to the public.

National Public Radio has called the Quartet ?among the most revered and enduring ensembles of its kind in the world.? Since coming together in 1964, Quartet members Arnold Steinhardt (violin), John Dalley (violin), Michael Tree (viola) and Peter Wiley (cello) have repeatedly circled the globe, playing in the world?s most prestigious concert halls. In addition to mastering the finest works in the existing quartet repertoire, the Guarneri String Quartet is committed to performing and popularizing works by today's foremost composers, such as Richard Danielpour and Lukas Foss.

They have received multiple honors, including the New York Seal of Recognition, the Award of Merit from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters in New York City and, in 2004, the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award from the Chamber Music America, the CMA's highest honor.

The Quartet continues their longstanding series and residency at the University of Maryland, where they are on the faculty. They perform regularly at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and last year performed at Lincoln Center, presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

The Guarneri String Quartet released a compact disc of Ravel, Debussy and Fauré quartets in 2001. Several of its recordings on the RCA Red Seal and Philips labels have won international awards, including a recording of Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga's String Quartet Nos. 1-3 (Philips) and their collaborations with such artists as Artur Rubinstein and Pinchas Zukerman.

The family and friends of the late Ward Lucas, a member of the Carleton College Board of Trustees for more than 20 years, established the annual Ward Lucas Lecture Series in the Arts. The intent of the lectureship is to invite distinguished creative artists to speak on campus, with or without demonstration. A committee appointed by the President of the College selects artists for the lectureship.
