The BBC Symphony Orchestra was founded by Adrian Boult in 1930 as London'sfirst permanent orchestra. Since then, its impressive roll-call ofChief Conductors has included Antal Dorati, Pierre Boulez, GennadyRozhdestvensky, Sir Colin Davis and Sir John Pritchard while theOrchestra has also worked closely with a number of great composers,including Bartók, Henze, Lutoslawski, P?rt, Prokofiev, Strauss andStravinsky. A strong commitment to new music has resulted in theOrchestra giving the premieres of over 1,100 works, many of which werecommissioned by the BBC and have since become established classics.

Asthe flagship orchestra of the BBC, the BBC Symphony Orchestra providesthe backbone of the Proms, with more than a dozen appearances eachsummer, including the First and Last Nights. The Orchestra's schedulealso includes an annual concert season at the Barbican, regional UKconcerts, international tours and commercial recordings. Everyperformance, at home or abroad, is broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and canalso be heard on the BBC Radio 3 Website.

InAutumn 2000 the Orchestra launched its 70th anniversary season at itsnew home, the Barbican, and Leonard Slatkin became the Orchestra'seleventh Chief Conductor, succeeding Sir Andrew Davis who became itsfirst Conductor Laureate. In another first, Mark-Anthony Turnage wasappointed to the new role of Associate Composer.

EveryJanuary the Orchestra celebrates the work of a 20th century composerwith a weekend festival; Messiaen, Weill and Schnittke have featuredmost recently and the work of John Adams will be explored in January2002. This weekend will be framed by two composer portraits looking atthe music of two American musical pioneers, Philip Glass and MortonFeldman. The BBC Symphony Orchestra records for many of the majorrecording labels and appears regularly on television, having recentlycompleted a second series of Masterworks for BBC 2 working with LeonardSlatkin, Sir Andrew Davis and Valery Gergiev.

The Orchestra has a busy touring schedule, recently visiting South America, Germany and Spain, and with forthcoming engagements in Belgium, France, the Far East and Australia. It regularly appears at international festivals including Aldeburgh, Edinburgh and Salzburg.The BBC Symphony Orchestra looks forward to the future as it continuesas one of the country's leading orchestras, fulfilling a key role inBritish cultural life.
