Mobile devices are revolutionizing how we communicate and do business with each other. Gartner studies have suggested that 1.2 billion people will carry a smartphone or tablet by 2016. Mobile device traffic on the web was up almost 200% between 2009 and 2010, and mobile application store revenues tripled between 2010 and 2011.
While building native applications on iOS, Android or other platforms is an option, many organizations are looking to mobile Web development to satisfy the need to field applications on the growing number of mobile platforms. Mobile Web technologies do not require developers to know programming languages like Objective-C or Java in order to field applications on a variety of devices. In fact, mobile Web technologies often allow organizations to leverage existing infrastructure and developer skills in order to support mobile needs.
This class introduces HTML5, CSS3 and other Web-based development technologies for creating mobile Web applications for mobile platforms. In addition to mobile development technologies, students are exposed to design philosophies and considerations. It also addresses many of the issues associated with device-fragmentation (the many devices and their unique capabilities/constraints) and prepares students for possible ways to address those issues. Finally, students are also exposed to frameworks based on mobile Web technologies currently popular with the mobile development community.
