TWo day Short course

Professors Timothy D. Stark (U. of Illinois) and John J. Bowders (U. of MIssouri) will present a two-day short course on soil liners for waste containment facilities. Some of the topics that will be covered include: compaction theory, soil liner design criteria, construction factors affecting hydraulic conductivity, effects of freeze/thaw and desiccation, CQC and CQA of soil liners, MDNR guidnace on soil liners, field inspections, and Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs).

Who Should attend

Those involved with the engineering design, construction, CQA/CQC, and/or regulatory oversight of waste containment facilities. This short course coincides with a guidance document that the Missouri DNR is preparing for soil liners.
WhY You Should attend

This is an advanced, discussion-oriented short course on compacted low permeability soil liners and GCLs for waste containment facilities. After completing this course one should understand:

· Types and properties of soil liners and GCLs;

· Design and construction factors for soil liners;

· Effects of freeze/thaw and desiccation and preventive measures;

· CQC/CQA procedures for soil liners with multiple borrow sources;

· Test pad versus cell compactive effort and equipment; and

· MDNR requirements for design, construction, and permitting soil liners and GCLs.
