Wednesdays 4/6, 4/13, 4/20, 4/27, and 5/4, 2011, 6pm-8pm

Join professional trainers and volunteers from all over the Bay Area for a special training series, on Wednesday evenings in April. Learn how you can make a big difference, with a small time commitment, leading tours at the Birthplace of Oakland.

After an eye-opening crash course in the art of storytelling and the history of California, you'll be encouraged to choose a topic of personal interest and craft an individualized tour of the Peralta House Museum. Tour guides are introduced to stories of Native Ohlone farmers, settlers on the historic Anza expedition including Luis Peralta, and current residents of Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood.

Professional staff assist tour guides in recording personal oral histories, for Peralta Hacienda's Archive of Community Memory. This is a fantastic opportunity to create a permanent record of your own history, or those of a friend or family member whose stories deserve to be told.

After attending the training, Tour Leaders volunteer once per month to educate local school groups, neigborhood residents, and visitors from around the world.

Docents learn leadership and public speaking skills from the best, take pride in their own history, and have a lot of fun! This is your chance to meet the brilliant, committed, friendly volunteers you've always wanted to know, and to help a fantastic organization share its inspiring message.

Please RSVP to [email protected] or (510) 532-9142 to attend the training. Be prepared to attend all Wednesday evening sessions in April and one on May 4th. Visit us during tour hours to learn more: Wednesdays through Saturdays, 2:30pm -- 5:30pm.
