Join us for a facilitated community conversation about the roll of art as a catalyst for social change. Tom DeCaigny, Executive Director of San Francisco's Performing Arts Workshop will facilitate a discussion about the possibility of bridging creative practice and politics by posing key questions:

* Given what many of us feel is the urgent need for social change and environmental restoration, what is the role of art and artists?
* What are the differences between art as social critique and art that impacts change?
* Can art directly impact policy in the United States? When has it?
* Is allying ourselves with existing organizations that are creating change a better strategy?
* Is there an aesthetics of activist art?

This event is being held in conjuction with Making Art, Making Change, a conference at the Herbst Pavilion in the Fort Mason Center on August 18th and 19th. The conference is an opportunity for artists, activists, teachers and young people to share strategies and build coalitions, exploring the intersections of art, activism and social change.
