COME AND SEE (Idi i Smotri)
Elem Klimov, SU, 1985, 142 mins
Described by J.G. Ballard as 'the greatest war film ever made', Klimov's film tells the story of Florya, a young partisan , during the German invasion of Belorussia in 1943. The film bears witness to the ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the invading Nazis and mixes horror with lyricism to convey its antifascist message.
* Discussion led by Mike Wayne, lecturer in film at Brunel University. The film is 124 mins and the discussion should last for 60 mins.
