About: He was born in New York in 1926, and sold his first photograph to Life magazine at the age of 16. At 17, he went to Hollywood to photograph stars on movie sets for Warner Brothers, producing a memorable portrait of Humphrey Bogart in the process. His career has been spent as a photographer for several journals, including Life, The New York Times Magazine, and Popular Photography. This image showcases Mitchell's fine graphic sense, with the figure reduced to a shadow under the wash of white fluorescent light, and the neon sign providing an almost folk-art touch.
