From 27th – 31st of May the festival CODED CULTURES, presented by the group 5uper.net, is taking place in Vienna (14.-18.10.2009 in Yokohama). The main focus is given to a new generation of media and knowledge cultures and their creative practices. Various artistic communities and projects, which develop new scopes of application by using electronic and digital media, will be connected and presented to a broad audience. Basically the festival is pointing out cultural developments and processes on the intersection of Art, Technology, Science and Entertainment.

As part of the official “Austria-Japan Year 2009”, CODED CULTURES functions as a creative intermediation platform in both countries. 140 years of diplomatic relations are the occasion for the presentation of interrelated emergences between “Creative Cities”, like Vienna and Yokohama demonstrate them. For this reason an outstanding number of Japanese Artists, Curators and Scientists will exchange their knowledge and practices with colleagues from Austria, Europe and around the world during the Symposium (28th – 31st of May) and the
Exhibition (27th May – 7th June) of CODED CULTURES. To intensify the cultural relations between both countries, in the forefront of the festival two Artists in Residence and one Scientist in Residence from Japan will be attending in Vienna.

The four sub-topics of the festival (Designing Complexity, Assembling Things, Expanding Locality, Creating Proto-Culture) explain on different levels, contents, forms and functions of cultural practices and display developments from the creative vision to a precise virtuality.

ABOUT CODED CULTURES

CODED CULTURES is an initiative of 5uper.net and was first presented in 2004 at the “MuseumsQuartier Wien” with the title “Decoding Digital Culture”. 5uper.net is generally based in the field of networking, which can have digital, social, local or global parameters. The group represents an interdisciplinary, international Communication-Forum, which is actively exploring a discussion in the fields of Media Arts, Digital Arts, Music, Technology and New Media. 5uper.net combines producers which are interested in the interface between humans and machines, the improvement of existing media channels and to enable new forms of communication, distribution and discussion. Since 2003 the group has presented exhibitions, workshops and symposiums which are related to the fields of media art and the intersection between art and technology.
